Agar is a gelatinous substance extracted from red algae, with several applications, including the manufacture of cosmetics and food products.
P. capillacea is widely distributed in the Azores, where it was considerably harvested between 1950-80, leading to a stock collapse in 1990. Back than, it reached an annual biomass between 1000-2000 t.
Nowadays, P. capillacea is being harvested in six of the nine islands of the Azores and few studies have been developed. Patarra et al. 2019 assessed how irradiance, temperature, nutrients and water aeration, contribute to their grow. This study attempted to establish the best growth conditions, and more studies alike should follow as they may contribute to the understanding of the species biology and eventually reduce harvesting

O Agar é uma substância gelatinosa extraída de algas vermelhas e devido à sua versatilidade é usada para vários propósitos, como cosmética e alimentação.
A alga P. capillacea é uma das algas a que se pode extrair agar. Atualmente, a apanha desta alga é realizada em 6 das 9 ilhas do Arquipélago dos Açores. Entre os anos 1950-80 é estimado que a colheita desta alga tenha atingindo anualmente 1000-2000 t.
Estudos como o de Patarra et al. 2019 ajudam a perceber qual a combinação de fatores que contribui para um melhor crescimento da alga.
